Rhode Island, or the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, is located in the United States’ northeastern region as it is officially known. It is one of the New England states and one of the oldest colonies. It is bordered by Connecticut, Massachusetts, the Atlantic Ocean, and New York (maritime border).
Rhode Island is the smallest state of all and the eighth least populous, with slightly over 1 million residents. It is also the second-most densely populated state, right after New Jersey. The capital and largest city of Rhode Island is Providence, which has approximately 180,000 residents.
Rhode Island was one of the states that showed the most allegiance to the British Crown. It was also the last state to ratify the Constitution of the United States. Rhode Island’s official nickname is the Ocean State, and the reason for it is rather obvious – it has so many bays and inlets in the Atlantic Ocean.
Ranking Criteria
ElitePersonalFinance extracted the latest data from the FBI crime statistics in the United States. We took violent crime as the main criteria. To get our score, we used this formula:
Crime Score = ( Total Number of Violent Crimes / Population ) * 1,000
This way, safer cities got the lowest score, and those more vulnerable to crimes got higher scores.
The cities that did not report crimes to the FBI and those under 10,000 residents were not included in the list.
